Frequently asked questions

Retirement visa in Argentina

Yes. Foreign retirees and pensioners can obtain temporary residency in Argentina by proving their foreign pension or retirement income as a source of support. Law 25.871 provides for this category under temporary residency as a pensioner, allowing them to reside legally and access a DNI, healthcare services and the banking system.

The main requirements are: proof of a foreign pension or retirement income through an official receipt or certificate, a valid passport, criminal background checks from the country of origin and from Argentina, proof of domicile, and valid health insurance. The pension amount must be equivalent to a minimum of 5 monthly minimum living wages (SMVM).

Yes. Argentina has bilateral social security treaties with several countries (Spain, Italy, Portugal, Chile, Brazil, among others) that allow foreign pensions to be collected without any issues. Payments can be received through international bank transfers to an account in Argentina.

The retirement visa is for those who prove income from a foreign pension or retirement benefit. The rentista visa covers a broader range: rental income, dividends, interest and any passive income. In practice, both are temporary residency categories with similar requirements, but the retiree presents their pension as the source of income.

Temporary residency as a retiree is granted for up to three years and is renewable upon proof of continued pension income. Once the legally required periods have been met (2 years for MERCOSUR nationals, 3 years for non-MERCOSUR nationals), the retiree may apply for conversion to permanent residency and obtain a permanent DNI.
