Permanent residency in Argentina

The main requirements are: having held temporary residency for the legally required period (2 years for MERCOSUR nationals, 3 years for non-MERCOSUR nationals), demonstrating lawful means of support, presenting a criminal background check from both the country of origin and Argentina, a valid foreigner DNI, proof of domicile, and a record of entries and exits from the country.

The permanent DNI is obtained once permanent residency has been approved by the National Immigration Office (DNM). With the favorable resolution, the foreigner must visit RENAPER to process the document. The permanent DNI must be renewed every 15 years and allows the holder to reside, work and exercise all civil rights without restrictions.

The conversion is initiated before the National Immigration Office (DNM) once the temporary residency period has been completed. The application is submitted with the required documentation (criminal background check, lawful means of support, proof of domicile). The process can be carried out with an in-person appointment or through the DNM digital platform.

The timeline varies depending on the administrative workload of the National Immigration Office (DNM). Under normal conditions, the process can take between 3 and 12 months from the submission of the complete application. During this time, the applicant maintains their valid temporary residency and can continue residing and working normally.

Yes. Permanent residency allows the foreigner to reside, work, study, and enter and leave the country without time restrictions. The holder enjoys the same civil rights as an Argentine citizen, including access to public healthcare, education and social security. The only difference is that they cannot vote or be elected to public office, except in municipal elections in some jurisdictions.
