Student visas for the United States

Student visas allow foreign nationals to pursue studies at institutions accredited by the SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) in the United States. The F-1 is for full-time academic studies (universities, colleges, language programs). The M-1 is for vocational and technical programs. The J-1 is for cultural exchange, research and internship programs.

The process requires prior admission to an accredited institution that issues form I-20 (for F-1 and M-1) or DS-2019 (for J-1). The student must demonstrate financial capacity to cover the first year of studies and living expenses. F-1 visa holders may work on campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic term.
