Refugee
In Argentina, the recognition of refugee status is regulated by Law 26.165, which protects individuals fleeing their country due to well-founded fears of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinions. Those who obtain this status are entitled to reside in the country for a period of two years, renewable based on the circumstances determined by the competent authority.
The process for applying for refugee status is managed by the National Commission for Refugees (CONARE), an entity under the Ministry of the Interior. Applications can be made both within Argentine territory and at the border. During the procedure, applicants are issued a provisional document that allows them to legally remain in the country, work, and access basic services such as healthcare and education.
Once refugee status is granted, beneficiaries are entitled to obtain a National Identity Document (DNI) and enjoy the civil, economic, social, and cultural rights afforded to any foreigner residing in Argentina. Furthermore, the law provides special protection, such as the prohibition of expulsion or return to their country of origin if they are at risk of persecution. Refugees are also eligible to obtain a travel document to facilitate international mobility.
