Residences
Law 25.871 and DNM Resolution No. 2040/2019 regulate temporary residence for studies for foreigners attending secondary, tertiary, university, or specialized studies in recognized institutions. This residence is granted for two years for nationals of Mercosur countries and one year, renewable, for other nationalities, depending on the duration of the academic activity.
It includes various categories: formal students (in official institutions), non-formal students (in courses outside the official system), part-time students (for specific subjects), exchange participants, interns, and scholarship holders. Each category has specific requirements, particularly the need for proof of enrollment through an electronic certificate issued by the official DNM system and registered in the RENURE.
The residence is granted for the duration of the studies, with the possibility of extending by up to 30 days. Extensions require proof of regular student status and academic progress.
For academic activities under 90 days (such as conferences or short courses), temporary residence is not required; a tourist visa suffices. This criterion simplifies immigration regulations, promoting participation in short academic activities without additional procedures.
